How GPA is Calculated

GPA (Grade Point Average) is a standardized way to measure academic performance. It converts letter grades into a numerical scale and weights them by credit hours to give a single score representing your overall academic achievement.

GPA Formula

GPA = ฮฃ(Grade Points ร— Credit Hours) / ฮฃ(Credit Hours)

Quality Points = Grade Points ร— Credit Hours per course

GPA = Total Quality Points รท Total Credit Hours

Grade Point Scale (4.0)

Grade Points Percentage (Typical)
A+ / A4.093โ€“100%
A-3.790โ€“92%
B+3.387โ€“89%
B3.083โ€“86%
B-2.780โ€“82%
C+2.377โ€“79%
C2.073โ€“76%

Frequently Asked Questions

How is GPA calculated?

GPA is calculated by dividing total quality points by total credit hours. Quality points for each course = grade points ร— credit hours. For example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course yields 12.0 quality points. Sum all quality points, divide by total credits, and you get your GPA.

What GPA scale does this use?

This calculator uses the standard US 4.0 scale: A/A+ = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, F = 0.0. Some institutions use slightly different scales (e.g., A+ = 4.3).

What is the difference between semester and cumulative GPA?

Semester GPA is calculated from only the current semester courses. Cumulative GPA includes all courses across all semesters. To calculate cumulative GPA, enter your existing GPA and total credits completed, then add your current courses.

What is a good GPA?

It depends on context. Generally: 3.5-4.0 is excellent (Dean's List, honors), 3.0-3.49 is good, 2.5-2.99 is average, 2.0-2.49 is below average but passing, and below 2.0 may trigger academic probation. For graduate school admission, most programs expect 3.0+.

Do plus/minus grades affect GPA significantly?

Yes. The difference between a B+ (3.3) and a B- (2.7) is 0.6 points โ€” significant over many courses. In a 15-credit semester, that 0.6 difference in one 3-credit course changes your semester GPA by 0.12 points.

How do I calculate GPA with repeated courses?

Policies vary by institution. Most schools use "grade replacement" where only the better grade counts toward GPA. Others average both attempts. Check your school's policy. In this calculator, enter only the grade that will count toward your GPA.

Can I raise my GPA quickly?

GPA becomes harder to change with more completed credits (the "GPA inertia" effect). With 90 credits at 3.0, getting a 4.0 in a 3-credit course only raises your cumulative GPA to 3.032. Focus on higher-credit courses for maximum impact, and take advantage of grade replacement policies if available.
