How to Calculate Gold Value
The value of gold depends on three factors: the current spot price, the purity (karat), and the weight of your gold item.
Gold Value Formula
Gold Value = Weight (g) × Price per gram (24K) × (Karat ÷ 24)
Step-by-Step
- Find the karat marking โ Look for stamps like 750 (18K), 585 (14K), 916 (22K), or 999 (24K) on your jewelry.
- Weigh your gold โ Use a jewelry scale (in grams) for accuracy. Kitchen scales work for larger pieces.
- Enter values above โ Select your karat, enter the weight, choose unit, and get your gold's melt value instantly.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is the gold value calculated?
We use the live spot gold price (price per troy ounce) and divide by 31.1035 to get the price per gram. Then we multiply by the karat purity factor and your gold weight to get the estimated value. For example, 18K gold is 75% pure, so its price per gram is 75% of the 24K price.
What karat should I choose?
24K is pure gold (99.9%), commonly used in bullion and coins. 22K is popular in Indian and Middle Eastern jewelry. 18K is standard for fine jewelry in the US and Europe. 14K and 10K are common in everyday American jewelry. Check for hallmarks stamped on your gold item to identify its karat.
How accurate is this calculator?
The calculator uses live spot gold prices updated every 5 minutes. The spot price is the raw commodity price. Actual buyback prices from dealers are typically 70-90% of spot price due to refining costs, dealer margins, and making charges. Rare or antique items may be worth more than melt value.
What is a troy ounce vs a regular ounce?
A troy ounce (ozt) is 31.1035 grams, used for precious metals. A regular (avoirdupois) ounce is 28.3495 grams. Gold is always measured in troy ounces. This calculator handles the conversion automatically based on your selected unit.
What is a pennyweight (dwt)?
A pennyweight is a unit commonly used by jewelers in the US and UK. 1 pennyweight = 1.55517 grams = 1/20 of a troy ounce. Many gold buyers in the US quote prices in pennyweights.
Does the price include making charges?
No. This calculator shows the raw gold melt value only. When buying jewelry, the retail price includes making charges (10-25%), GST/tax, and design premiums. When selling, dealers typically pay 85-95% of spot value for plain gold and less for jewelry with stones.
How often is the gold price updated?
The price auto-refreshes every 5 minutes from live market data. You can also click "Refresh Price" manually. Gold markets trade nearly 24/7 globally, so prices change constantly during trading hours.
Can I use this for silver or platinum?
This calculator is specifically designed for gold. The karat system is unique to gold. For silver and platinum, check our currency converter or look for dedicated precious metals calculators.
